Remini is reshaping the world around us with a clay filter. During the May Day holiday, a large number of clay figures swept across major social media. During the May Day holiday, a new style of painting appeared in the beautiful travel photos and landscape photos - clay style, a style of picture that is neither ugly nor beautiful. The picture of this picture is similar to the style of the cartoon "Shaun the Sheep". The visual effect is highly simulated with the texture of clay or plasticine, and it looks a little funny or rough.

The app that provides this filter, Remini, has also topped the list of free apps in the Chinese app store. Remini was first developed by Beijing Dagong Technology in China and then sold to the Italian company Bending Spoons. After iterations, Remini has launched a variety of functions such as AI photo generation and video enhancement.

AI Blue Media also downloaded Remini and experienced the world of clay for the masters. I have to say that the appearance of the clay masters is really different.

Enter the "AI Filter" from the toolbar at the bottom of the app, select the picture you want to generate, and then you can choose the filter. On this page, 26 different AI filters are provided. The first "Clay" filter is the popular clay filter, followed by Jade, Pixel and other filters.

In addition to the big guys, AI Blue Media also tested many other pictures. After actual testing, it was found that the quality of the pictures generated by Remini was also uneven, and whether it failed or not was like opening a blind box.

Although some pictures do have delicate details and the overall picture has a sense of story and film, some pictures are funny but a little weird, such as bright double eyelids turning into dead fish eyes; gender inexplicably changing; and even more, a human with three nostrils appears...

During the experience of AI Blue Media, the time it took to generate each image ranged from half a minute to five or six minutes. Sometimes, after several minutes of looping prompts of "applying AI filters" and "reshaping reality", the image generation actually failed. It seems that during peak hours, Remini's AI computing power is still under considerable pressure.

1. Xianyu clay figures, never stop making them

Social media users are enjoying using clay filters to reshape the world around them and sharing these novel and bizarre clay photos on social platforms. In the process, they unknowingly become Remini's "tap water", attracting more users to join the clay army.

But this carnival in the clay world has kept some users out.

The first to be affected are Android users. Currently, Remini is only available on the Apple App Store. If Android users want to use it, they first need to learn how to surf the Internet, and then find a way to log in to the Google Play Store and other app stores to download it, which is quite troublesome.

In addition, although new users of Remini can experience it for free for seven days after downloading, they will be charged 68 yuan per week after seven days. Calculated based on four weeks a month, it will cost about 272 yuan per month. The pink diamond SVIP of Meitu Xiuxiu, a domestic photo editing software giant, only costs 30 yuan per month; ChatGPT 4.0 costs 20 US dollars per month, which is about 144 yuan. In comparison, Remini is obviously much more expensive than Meitu Xiuxiu and chatGPT.

Obviously, whether Remini is a photo editing or AI software, the subscription fee of 68 yuan a week is indeed not cheap for ordinary users.

Some people saw the gap in Remini and smelled the business opportunity. So, Xianyu users took action.

On the Xianyu app, a large number of links for clay image creation were posted. AI Blue Media entered keywords such as "clay filter" and "Remini" on Xianyu for search. After a rough browse, it was found that the price of generating a photo in the posted links ranged from 0.5 yuan to 2 yuan. The more popular links have been viewed more than 4,000 times, and more than 300 people have clicked "want". Many users have also launched preferential packages of "one yuan for one photo, two yuan for three photos, and three yuan for five photos". Some users have even launched a service package of "four photos per day, 20 yuan per month".

Ma Qi was one of the first users to create clay products on Xianyu. On the first day of the May Day holiday, he posted a link on Xianyu. As of May 6, the number of transactions completed with Ma Qi through Xianyu had reached about 430.

In addition to Machi, Fan Lemei is also one of the users who posted links on Xianyu.

Since Fan Lemei had used Remini's child photo generation function last year, she could no longer enjoy the 7-day free trial for new users due to the popularity of the clay filter. However, she needed to generate a lot of pictures herself, so she ruthlessly opened a one-week subscription for Remini.

Fan Lemei charges 1 yuan for each image she creates, and it takes about half a minute to create each image. Like most users on Xianyu who provide services for taking orders, she also provides services for creating the "Jade" filter on Remini.

Since Remini does not provide the function of hiding watermarks, if a customer needs a watermark-free version of a photo, Fan Lemei will manually remove the watermark from the image and charge an additional fee of 0.5 yuan for each image.

When Fan Lemei posted the link on Xianyu to do the work for her, she initially just wanted to make back her impulse purchase and earn back the subscription fee. Fan Lemei started taking orders on Xianyu on May 3, and as of May 6, she had completed about 70 transactions and realized a return on her investment.

2. Domestic imitators change their ways according to the wind

In addition to Xianyu users, the domestic photo editing giant Meitu Xiuxiu also quickly followed suit and launched two clay filters on the app - "Clay" and "Clay II". Users can enter the page to use the clay filter through "Picture Beautification-Creative Play-AI Conversation". As of press time, the "Clay" filter has become exclusive to Pink Diamond VIPs.

The two filters launched by Meitu XiuXiu directly fill the gap of Remini for Android users and provide another way to the world of clay.

Later, some users compared the pictures generated by Meitu Xiuxiu with Remini. Some people prefer Remini's style, thinking that the clay effect generated by Remini is more prominent and the details are richer, while others prefer Meitu Xiuxiu, thinking that the pictures generated by Meitu Xiuxiu are more detailed in restoring the facial expressions of people.

After comparison, AI Blue Media found that there is a relatively obvious difference between Meitu and Remini in the details: when processing pictures containing Chinese characters, Chinese patterns and buildings, Remini tends to convert these elements into English or Western style, which inevitably weakens the local cultural characteristics of the pictures; in contrast, Meitu, as a domestic software, is slightly better than Remini in understanding local culture, and shows obvious advantages in retaining Chinese elements in pictures.

From Remini's clay filter that set off social media, to a group of clay image maker businesses that emerged on Xianyu, and domestic image giant Meitu XiuXiu quickly launching the same filter, both users and businesses are consciously or unconsciously contributing to this carnival in the clay world, and once again showing users the surprises that generative AI brings in visual creativity.
