In the Internet age, everyone wants to benefit from self-media. So how to do self-media? This article summarizes seven types of self-media from the perspective of what kind of self-media is more profitable. Let's take a look!

When it comes to how to run self-media, the issues that come to mind most easily are content, traffic generation and monetization.

People tend to look for so-called secrets to increasing followers and methods of attracting traffic first, but let’s not talk about whether there are secrets to easily increasing followers.

I think before doing self-media, you should first figure out one thing, which is what kind of self-media you should do to make money.

This is the root. If you don’t understand this issue and just blindly shoot and write, it will be difficult to monetize in the end.

So, I want to share with you my experience over the past few years.

1. Self-media that provides solutions

As for individuals who want to create their own media, I don’t recommend that you create information, entertainment, science, etc.

Because running this kind of self-media is a typical thankless task, it is well received but not popular, and there is a high degree of homogeneity.

You must be a self-media that provides solutions. Selling cheap products is a solution. Recycling second-hand products and helping others find houses are solutions. Teaching others how to live broadcast, how to do e-commerce, how to shoot short videos, and how to build personal IP are also solutions.

It is true that you may get traffic by dancing, singing a song, telling a story, etc., but there are too many such accounts, the success rate is too low, and the sustainability is too short.

2. Become a highly vertical self-media

Don’t write or take photos of whatever is popular. It’s useless. We are not posting on WeChat Moments or distributing flyers on the streets.

To be a highly vertical self-media:

The first is the verticality of the population. What kind of people do you want to serve? The elderly, children, mothers, etc.

The second is product verticality. When selling to children, are you planning to sell sandals or sneakers? Are you planning to sell down jackets or T-shirts, sweaters or sports suits?

The clearer the solution provided, the easier it is to focus on monetization.

3. Become a product-oriented self-media

In order to monetize, what products have you prepared in advance?

Is it courses, physical objects, consulting, training, or community?

Treat your account, content, and service as part of a product delivery process, and always think about how to optimize this product.

Many information accounts are simply for spreading information.

Especially some vertical information accounts, which seem to target a precise audience, but are extremely difficult to monetize.

4. Create a personal IP-based self-media

Remember that personal IP is unique. Dong Yuhui will always be Dong Yuhui. If he is called Dongfang Zhenxuan Dong Yuhui, then he will have nothing to do with him if he changes jobs or companies in the future.

Because everyone will remember Oriental Selection first and recognize its service and quality, and Dong Yuhui is just one of thousands of bloggers.

But it’s different if you turn around. Dong Yuhui is Dong Yuhui. He keeps emphasizing this identity. Even if he is alone in the future or goes into another business, he still has potential energy.

For example, many people are embarrassed to appear on camera, and like to create accounts and content types that do not feature real people. However, the traffic brought by this practice has nothing to do with the blogger himself.

Whether changing platforms, accounts, or businesses, bloggers still have to start all over again.

5. Be a light-delivery self-media

If you are not selling physical products, then I suggest you start a light-delivery self-media.

What does it mean? It means that whenever you want to stop, change tracks, or stop doing something, the loss will be minimal.

For example, if you provide consulting services and don’t want to provide them for free or charge a fee, you can just stop or delete the introduction.

But if you stock up on goods, buy a lot of equipment and even hire employees at the beginning, the cost of this self-media approach will be too high.

Even if you want to promote products, for a long time, you will only promote products for merchants instead of selling them yourself.

6. Become a self-media for private domain traffic diversion

Before you start your own media, it is recommended that you prepare several WeChat accounts.

Whether you are writing on a public account, shooting a video account, or using Douyin or Kuaishou, you must direct traffic to your private WeChat account.

There are only three purposes for diverting traffic to the private domain:

  • More accurate communication
  • More accurate conversion
  • More accurate repurchase

No matter how good the traffic from external platforms is, it can be stopped at any time.

7. Create a self-media that makes money from day one

This is the point I have always emphasized: when running a self-media platform, you have to think about making money from day one.

And it must be executed immediately and presented to the user.

First, prepare your monetization product in advance. Even if it is just a piece of information, you can sell it for one dollar.

Second, highlight it on your own media account. For example, the official account can directly guide and display the product QR code.

On other social media, you can attract users to find you by showing your honors and achievements through profiles and videos.

Don’t wait until you’ve shot 100 videos and gained tens of thousands of followers before monetizing. This is a huge waste of traffic.

8. Become a channel self-media

If you want to make money by doing self-media now, the ability required is not just about writing text.

Instead, you need to have self-media with multiple business formats, multiple scenarios, and multiple channels. For example, if you are writing content for a public account, you also need to synchronize your content on Toutiao, Zhihu, and Baijiahao.

At the same time, turn your manuscript into a video and post it on Video Account, Douyin Account, and Xigua.

In addition to attracting traffic, live broadcasts are also needed for maintenance and conversion.

Many people will say that many bloggers only need to write articles and have never seen their live broadcasts. Don’t they make money anyway?

Brothers, for the great writers, you can make money just by writing one or two articles a month.

For ordinary people like us, apart from luck, hard work and diligence are our only competitive advantage.

If others broadcast once a month, then you broadcast every day.

If others shoot one video a week, you shoot five a day.

Only with extreme efforts can you match one percent of others' efforts and get a little bit of soup to drink.

There are indeed many ways to create your own media, such as topic selection, character setting, opening, monetization, etc., but the first step is very important. Knowing what you want to do is a prerequisite.

Otherwise it’s all in vain, which is why I’m sharing this article today.
