Hello, fellow villagers. I am the village chief. It is becoming increasingly difficult for ordinary people to start a business, whether it is selling products, running their own media, or creating a small platform of their own. The village chief talked to everyone about some recent phenomena and policies, and found that the difficulty for ordinary people to start a business has increased by several exponentially. 1. It is becoming increasingly difficult to monetize self-media1. National supervisionOn February 25, 2023, the State Administration for Market Regulation promulgated the "Internet Advertising Management Measures" with Order No. 72. Article 9 of the soft article regulation clause clearly states that if goods or services are promoted through knowledge introduction, experience sharing, consumer evaluation, etc., and shopping links and other purchasing methods are attached, the advertiser must clearly mark "advertisement ". On July 10, 2023, the official account of the Cyberspace Administration of China issued a "Notice on Strengthening the Management of Self-Media" , which also emphasized the need to carry out relevant supervision on the authenticity of content published by creators and their profit rights. 2. WeChat requirementsSubsequently, WeChat quickly introduced relevant notifications and functions under the guidance of this policy. a. It is clearly required that the authors of public accounts must clearly identify advertisements when publishing links to third-party products and services. b. It is clearly required that bloggers’ advertisements must go through the public account advertising mutual selection platform, otherwise the account functions will be restricted and banned. For many small bloggers, it is not easy to get an advertisement or launch a small product. But now, both advertising and product publishing are subject to restrictions. 2. It is becoming increasingly difficult to launch productsIn the past, we only knew that websites needed to be registered before they went online, but recent policies require that apps and mini-programs also need to be registered before they go online. This puts a lot of pressure on the team that is developing the mini program matrix and mini program development services. At the same time, it is also a challenge for individual developers. 1. Strict reviewAccording to our personal experience, some of our mini-programs and apps that we launch now require review by local Internet police. When we released the app before, there were several app markets that had no place to review the information and simply refused to pass it. As a result, we spent a month on product development and a month on review. 2. Strict qualificationsDifferent categories require different qualifications. For example, our product provides audio and video uploading, so we need a radio and television program production license and an Internet culture operation license. Some content also requires certificates in financial securities, or Buddhism-related fields. This certificate alone is a stumbling block for many individuals and companies. It takes at least one or two months from application to issuance of the certificate, which means you miss many opportunities to catch up with other platforms. 3. It is becoming increasingly difficult to bring goodsMany people would say, if I don’t make a mini program or my own media, I can just open a Taobao or Pinduoduo app to sell goods. 1. Increased traffic costsCurrently, the traffic costs of Taobao, Pinduoduo, and JD.com are very high, as they are all traditional e-commerce channels. As for short video channels, Kuaishou, Xiaohongshu, and Douyin have also entered the era of traffic investment . If you want to rely on natural traffic to increase sales, it is difficult unless you are a veteran and have invalidated several accounts. Many offline merchants are not out of stock, but traffic is expensive and they don’t know how to generate traffic. 2. Higher qualification requirementsI remember that seven or eight years ago, it was very easy to sell goods in personal C stores on many platforms. All you had to do was fill in your ID card information and bind a bank card. But now it’s different. Whether it’s Taobao, Douyin, or a video store, individuals selling goods need a business license. Moreover, for some categories, not only a business license is required, but also a series of certificates such as relevant patents, inspections, etc., and the deposit is also very high. If you are not careful, your deposit will be deducted or frozen. 4. Three suggestions for ordinary people to start a businessBased on the above bad situations, I would like to make three pertinent suggestions to ordinary people. 1. Start with small projectsIt is not suitable to start a business on a large scale now, especially the era of spending money to attract users and build habits is over. On the one hand, there is no money in the capital market, and it is difficult to raise funds. On the other hand, the cost of acquiring customers is now higher than ever before, so when starting a business, keep things simple. Don't spend money indiscriminately. Start with one account, one product, one store, one vertical category, one small tool or one small need. This way you can be in control and quickly iterate or transform when you encounter problems. 2. Get qualifications in advanceWhether you want to open a Taobao store or an offline store, or you want to create a small program or do some private group buying and distribution. I hope you can prepare the relevant qualifications in advance, and apply for the most basic business license, including a wider scope of business. If it involves some special categories, the relevant qualifications should be applied for early. Otherwise, you will either be screwed by your peers or customers, or by the platform. Startups cannot withstand these repeated little setbacks. 3. Start a side job firstIn fact, the current stage is really not suitable for starting a business. If you are not very rich and have good skills, I sincerely suggest that you stay in your original unit. Or you can find a job with lower pay and lower requirements, ensure basic income, and then explore some side jobs. Whether it's shooting videos, doing private domain distribution or setting up a stall to sell goods, you can do it in your spare time. On the one hand, using a side job can reduce risks, and on the other hand, it can provide low-cost experience to verify personal abilities and entrepreneurial direction.
