The core competitiveness of the workplace is language

You will find that successful people spend more time to express what they do more clearly. If you feel overwhelmed in the workplace recently, you might as well improve your competitiveness in language.

I was chatting with a friend a few days ago and suddenly came to a conclusion:

Although we are doing data analysis, and math sounds particularly important, in the end, language is the core competitiveness.

Why do I say so?

1. Clear and accurate

In the workplace, if you want to accomplish something, it is impossible to do it by yourself. You can either rely on the help of others or help others.

It is said that one person can walk fast, but a group of people can go far. This statement still makes sense.

If you want to collaborate with others better, communication and collaboration are inevitable. From a small verbal communication to a big report, as well as document description and so on, these scenarios all require your language skills to be tested.

Clear expression is the most basic requirement of expression. As long as you can make a thing clear, there is no need for fancy words. You don’t have to consider whether the structure of the text conforms to the norms. As long as you can make others understand it, you can survive in the workplace.

But not everyone has this.

Many people have no focus when communicating, talking about this and that, and they don't know what they are talking about after chatting for a long time. If this kind of expression is used in the composition question of the Chinese language test, it will basically fail because it does not fit the topic at all.

Do you still remember the requirements of the exam? Meeting the requirements of the questions is the most basic requirement.

Unclear expression is actually a sign of poor Chinese language proficiency.

2. Vivid Image

Even more demanding than clear expression is vivid expression.

Many big names like to use analogies to describe their products in their speeches, and Steve Jobs is particularly famous for this.

When Jobs launched the first generation of iPod, the main selling point was its large storage capacity. However, when many MP3s were still within 128M, iPod launched two versions, 5GB and 10GB. In order to make this selling point more vivid, Jobs did not emphasize how large the storage space was, but said "put 1,000 songs in your pocket".

Although storage space and the number of songs you can listen to are equivalent, the latter expression makes it more vivid and easy to remember.

Xiaomi's main business is mobile phones, but Xiaomi Mall also sells some small appliances and daily necessities, such as wristbands, power banks, towels, mattresses, etc. Xiaomi calls these businesses "baked sweet potato businesses." What does it mean?

Xiaomi has 300 million users today, 250 million of whom are active users. Instead of letting this traffic go to waste, it is better to turn it into some sales. Just like a hot stove, its heat will dissipate, so why not use the residual heat to roast some sweet potatoes?

This expression immediately captures the core of this business model, and summarizes the whole thing clearly in just five words.

In data analysis work, we can generally improve it by using models or visualization to express it more vividly.

For example, funnel analysis is actually a vivid expression of business modeling, comparing the conversion link to a loophole, which everyone can quickly accept. Another example is matrix analysis, which organizes different types into four quadrants on a coordinate axis. This expression can also quickly make what you want to say clear.

3. Reasonable Expression

The superlative expression is the reasonable expression.

Say the same idea in a different way so that the listener can immediately know what your point is.

For example, the scale of channel traffic last month remained basically the same as the previous month, but the efficiency of user transaction conversion after traffic diversion has declined.

The main reason is that the scale of traffic diversion from core channels with better diversion effects has declined. At the same time, some low-quality channels have expanded their investment to fill this gap, but the conversion rate of low-quality channels is relatively low, which reduces the overall efficiency.

Faced with such a problem, how should we express it in our report?

Expression 1 : The traffic scale remained the same month-on-month, but the overall transaction conversion efficiency was lowered because the scale of low-quality channels increased.

Expression 2 : The scale of traffic diversion from high-quality channels has declined. Although low-quality channels have filled the traffic scale, there is still a large gap in the scale of transactions diverted.

These two expressions actually mean the same thing. Which one is more reasonable?

I think it's the second one.

The first expression focuses on increasing the proportion of low-quality channels, so the subtext is to limit the development of low-quality channels.

But the core point of this problem is not that the low-quality issues are done too well, but that the high-quality channels are done too poorly.

So what we should talk about is the decline of high quality, not the increase of low quality.

So I think the second expression is more reasonable. It allows the audience to immediately get the problem of the decline of high-quality channels.

If your Chinese language skills are not solid, it will be difficult for you to appreciate this subtle difference, let alone write it out yourself.

IV. Summary

No matter what profession you are in, it is ultimately about cooperation and competition between people. So your language ability determines how easy it is for you to collaborate with others.

I have observed many high-level people around me. Their basic skills may not be that great! The difference is that they spend more time to express what they do more clearly. You will find that basically excellent people are good at public speaking. This has a lot to do with their language skills.
