At 15:30 on the afternoon of July 10, 2023, the official account of the Cyberspace Administration of China issued a "Notice on Strengthening the Management of "Self Media"." The notice covers 13 items including self-media account registration, identity authentication, content source, information release, labels, profit-making rights, MCN management, and violation handling. The village chief here refers to them as the 13 items of self-media control. The release of this notice has attracted great attention in the entire Internet circle, and it has been flooding the WeChat Moments with messages. 1. Self-media control is imperativePersonally speaking, I strongly support strengthening control over the self-media industry. First, in recent years, the cost of spreading rumors and slandering others on the Internet has become increasingly lower, regardless of the facts. All it takes to attract attention is a mouth, a photoshopped picture, or a piece of fabricated words , and it becomes popular or causes serious harm to others. Secondly, not long ago, the founder of Yiou expressed dissatisfaction and suggestions on the inaccurate anonymity function provided by the Zhihu platform, which aroused great attention from netizens. Later, with the efforts of all parties, Zhihu officially announced that it would shut down the anonymity function. Third, in order to attract attention and gain advertising traffic, many self-media often fabricate and distort facts and use AI to automatically generate and publish false content. Fourthly, not long ago, Zhang Dapao, a Douyin celebrity with 6 million followers, initiated an online fight on Douyin. A certain big V named Wu was accused of hyping up topics of unemployment and housing, which had a very bad impact on the entire Internet content ecology and social environment. It can be seen from this that the threshold for fraud, attracting attention, hyping topics, and making profits on the Internet is too low. This is bad for the entire social atmosphere and is full of hostility. 2. Self-media control will become more and more standardizedBecause I am both a content platform and a content producer, I have read the 13 rules for self-media control over and over again, and I have selected some of the contents to emphasize to you all. 1. The Party, government, military and education should not be touchedIf you are not doing this kind of vertical self-media, I suggest you keep your mouth shut and focus on sharing your life, food, and travels, and never touch it. At the same time, it is also expected that in the future, the certification of relevant certificates and qualifications in related fields will be more stringent, such as securities, education, finance, medical care, etc. Maybe you can publish it, but you don’t have the qualifications and certification, so others won’t be able to see it after you publish it. 2. Don’t make up stories just for trafficIn order to increase their followers and share in the traffic revenue, many people like to make up stories to attract attention. The subsequent review and complaints will be more stringent, and even require clear source addresses and literature materials, which is a bit like Baidu Encyclopedia. 3. Upgrade of matrix account management and controlWhether it is e-commerce or self-media, in many fields, hard work can actually create miracles, that is, creating a matrix account. For example, store groups, matrix numbers, corporate accounts, etc., but the notice clearly requires: one person one number, one company two numbers, including the management and control of MCN agencies. Therefore, facial recognition may be required to register for WeChat, WeChat groups, use other self-media accounts, and manage stores in the future to avoid malicious marketing through multiple accounts and groups. 4. Increase your income and followersThe most important things for self-media are increasing followers and making money. Among the 13 items, there are three items regarding increasing followers and income that require special attention. First, measures will be taken to ban the violating self-media and simultaneously suspend their profit-making rights for a period of 2-3 times the ban period. In serious cases, the ban can be directly cancelled. For example, if you are banned for a month, but you cannot accept rewards for three months, have no traffic income, cannot put up windows, and cannot use the shared bikes, then this account is almost useless. Secondly, self-media that violate the regulations will not be allowed to increase followers during the ban period, and their historical content will not be recommended. In serious cases, they may even be banned from increasing followers forever and their fan base may be cleared. Therefore, after those fantasy accounts are blocked, at most they can be restored in a few months. This time, everyone’s thoughts have been directly interrupted. Third, the accounts of all malicious self-media that spread rumors and hype up hot topics will be closed. Regardless of which of the above violations occurs, it is required to be reported to the relevant Internet information department regularly and in a timely manner, and included in the monitoring and blacklist. This also directly dispels the idea of some people canceling their accounts and starting over after violating the rules. 3. The platform enters a period of strict controlI believe that all platforms should have been interviewed in advance before the release of the 13 articles. Based on Zhihu's offline anonymity function, we can see some clues from the control of Zhang Dapao and Wu DaV. I think this is not only a warning to others, but also the beginning of the platform's announcement to strengthen content governance. Therefore, I predict that in the future, major content platforms such as official accounts, video accounts, Douyin, Kuaishou, Zhihu, Xiaohongshu, Bilibili, Baidu, etc. will enter a new round of rectification and supervision. 1. Account registration and rights acquisition are more difficultIn the past, one could register with just an ID card and a mobile phone number. In the future, self-media are expected to have other assessments before publishing content, such as courses, exams, probation periods, credit scores, etc. 2. A wave of big V accounts will be bannedNot only the many small accounts that use the matrix to steal traffic, but also many large accounts are expected to be further restricted and banned. 3. It is more difficult to increase followers and gain profitsMany people register self-media accounts just to increase their followers, so that they can engage in live PK, bring goods, private domain introduction, traffic sharing, etc. Then, the requirements will be strict in terms of difficulty of increasing followers, monetization income, etc., especially in some categories, which may even require a special license or a targeted invitation to be eligible for activation. 4. Plagiarism and AI-generated content will be monitored closelyThere are a lot of so-called AI course trainings now, which tell you how to make money with AI live streaming, how to generate articles in batches with AI to earn traffic share, etc. I have seen many people pay hundreds or thousands of dollars, dreaming of making over a thousand a day. Next, not only will publishers be required to label content generated by AI, but the platform will also impose key restrictions on related content and accounts. 4. Has the opportunity to make money from good content finally arrived? When seeing this news, two types of people are very happy: The first are netizens who suffer from false and hyped content, and the second are down-to-earth self-media authors who suffer from the pain of attracting attention and traffic. Some people say that, from now on, as long as the content is good, the spring of income for self-media authors will come. To be frustrating, I don't think so. Indeed, in the future, false, eye-catching, vulgar and other online content will be subject to some restrictions. However, users have two mindsets when viewing content: one is for knowledge, and the other is for entertainment. As we all know, the content of seeking knowledge is often boring and it tests a person's patience. On the contrary, entertainment content, whether it is news, hot events, historical stories, civil disputes, etc., are attracting users' attention. So, I don’t think that the next step will be the spring of high-quality self-media content. Maybe there will be more opportunities in terms of exposure and higher account security, but from the perspective of making money, users will ultimately have to pay for it. Therefore, it is recommended that all content creators continue to explore and innovate to meet the content needs of users. Author: Village Chief, WeChat public account: Shili Village |
